Mumma’s Apple Crumble

Jump to Recipe

Who doesn’t love a hearty warm quick and easy dessert on a cold winter’s night.

Choosing the Right Apples: opt for a mix of sweet and tart apples like Granny Smith and pink lady. This combination adds depth of flavor to your crumble.

Prepping the Apples: Ensure your apples are peeled, cored, and sliced uniformly. This helps them cook evenly and makes for a better texture in the final dish.

Balancing Sweetness: Taste your apple mixture before adding sugar to adjust sweetness accordingly. Some apples may be sweeter than others, so you may need to add more or less sugar based on your preference.

Enhancing Flavor: Add a splash of lemon juice and a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the apple mixture for a burst of flavor.

Creating the Crumble Topping: For an extra crunch, add chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans to your crumble topping. You can also mix in rolled oats for a hearty texture.

Consistency of Crumble Topping: The crumble topping should resemble coarse crumbs with pea-sized clumps. This ensures a crispy topping after baking.

Baking Tips: Bake your apple crumble in a preheated oven for even cooking. If the top browns too quickly, cover it loosely with foil to prevent burning while the apples cook through.

Serving Suggestions: Serve your apple crumble warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of freshly whipped cream for a delightful dessert experience.

Storage and Reheating: Leftover apple crumble can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days. Reheat portions in the oven for a few minutes to restore crispiness to the topping.

Customization Options: Experiment with different fruit combinations like apple and pear or add a handful of dried cranberries or raisins to the filling for added sweetness and texture variation.

Notes

I’ve made this dish many a times and I use whatever apples I have and honestly my family enjoyed the recipe more when I made it with pink lady or royal gala apples.  Be sure to use firm apples as this will keep them from becoming too mushy.
